You must have heard of the much touted benefits of water in curing hemorrhoids. It must be too simple an answer to such a painful and embarrassing condition.

 

However, simple as it is, water indeed plays a key role in the proper functioning of your digestive system.

What Causes Hemorrhoids?

The first question we need to ask is how hemorrhoids are formed? The initial appearance of a hemorrhoid usually points to episodes of constipation. Constipation forces you to strain, which increases the flow of blood into the veins in the rectal area, enlarging them and forming hemorrhoids. Another culprit would be diarrhea. The frequent removal of stools brought about by diarrhea also puts pressure on the rectum and triggers hemorrhoids. Chronic diarrhea also leads to dehydration which again leads to constipation.

Binging Does It

A number of people also get their first case of hemorrhoids after an all night party of beers and wines with friends. Excessive alcohol is diuretic as it induces you to urinate frequently and in big volumes, and therefore may also cause dehydration.

 

Other potent diuretics are the caffeine-laced drinks such as:

Teas

Colas

Soft drinks

These are also fluids and may lead you into thinking that they hydrate the body.

 

You might also think that instead of drinking plain water, it is safe and even tastier to substitute water with these other beverages. You are wrong, they instead cause dehydration.

Drink It Up…

I think that by now, we are in a consensus that dehydration is a major cause of hemorrhoids and that drinking water is key.

 

You might ask, “How much water should I drink?” In many cases, we do not count the number of glasses we consume each day so we won’t know if we had enough water to properly hydrate our systems.

 

There are no hard and fast rules but it is always recommended to take at least eight glasses of water per day, or equivalent to around 2 liters of water per day. That’s a huge amount but a better way to manage it is to have a cup of water by your side wherever you go. Sip it as you would with coffee or tea. In no time, you’ll get use to the volume and would crave for more. It doesn’t help to gulp down a liter upon waking up and another before bedtime.

 

Drinking it on regular basis throughout the day is in fact more beneficial:

 

Drinking water certainly stops dehydration, causes your stool to soften and make it easy to pass, and obviously stops constipation.

 

Even if you already have hemorrhoids, this helps in alleviating pain and discomfort. It has other benefits as well.

 

It helps in losing weight and flushes out toxins from the body.

 

It is also the least expensive beverage and is available almost anywhere.

 

Obviously, there are multiple benefits in drinking enough water. So drink to it.
