Know The Causes of Hemorrhoids

We have all heard of the funny one-liners that usually use this sickness as a punch line. The laugh track gets turned on and the people on screen act all uncomfortable and speechless, and then move on into another scene and feature another joke. The hemorrhoids joke is forgotten and not a word of the sickness (or what it is) is spoken of again, until such time it fits into a joke again.

This is usually the case but do people really understand what a hemorrhoid is? Or more importantly, what causes one to develop a hemorrhoid?

Well, before anything else, a hemorrhoid is inflammation, or swelling of the veins in the anus and the rectum. In fact, the term "hemorrhoids" is technically a term that refers to tissues at (located where the anus and the rectum meet) that are filled with blood vessels.

Basically, the main cause of hemorrhoids is the increased pressure in these veins. Now the important thing to note is what causes these increased pressures.

Bad Food

The main reasons behind developing hemorrhoids are actually connected; these are straining of the rectal veins due to diarrhea or constipation and by a bad diet.

The current type of diet that people have nowadays, a diet that is high on processed ingredients, while lacking sufficient fiber leads to irregular bowel movements that put a strain on the on the body.

In fact, in Africa, where the diet of the people include a lot of fiber (and roughage) have low cases of hemorrhoids. But, as a country becomes more developed and the diets of the people become more inclined towards the fast food nation, the cases of hemorrhoids also increase.

It is clear therefore that bad food is a main culprit for having these uncomfortable visitors.

Other Causes

There are of course other causes that increase or aggravate hemorrhoids. Some of these culprits are due to bad habits or lifestyles but some are also natural.

The following are some other causes for this irritating sickness:

One factor can be the lifestyle one has. Obesity can increase the chances of getting hemorrhoids due to the fact that being overweight can increase the pressure in the veins in the rectum.

Also, posture can play a significant part in causing one to appear.

The trend of reading in the toilet also places added strain on the veins and thus, might cause this as well.

Smoking, the use of laxatives, and other habits that can cause constipation of diarrhea can also cause hemorrhoids.

The modern toilet design also promotes the occurrence of these nasty visitors.

There are some causes that are natural and are not based on bad habits or bad lifestyle choices.

For women, pregnancy is usually accompanied by fits of hemorrhoids due to the fact that the fetus inside the woman puts added pressure on the veins, leading to this problem.

Other natural causes include:

Aging

Heredity

Body make up (like say, for example, a person has irritable bowel syndrome that causes a lot of diarrhea).

There are a lot of causes of hemorrhoids. The good thing is that hemorrhoids usually heal themselves, unless it is some does something to flare it up. Leave it alone and it should leave you soon enough.
