Hemorrhoids Do’s and Don’ts

Hemorrhoids are painful varicose veins in the anus once they are swollen. The site of the affliction can be a source of many jokes thus, it is of no wonder that people suffering from this choose to suffer in silence. Victims go to the doctor only when they are already in an unbearable pain.

Pain In The Butt: Don’t Keep It A Secret

However, while physical pain is oftentimes easier to bear than embarrassment, suffering in silence is unnecessary as almost 50% of Americans have to deal with hemorrhoids by age 50. That is quite a big number, so you are not alone and need not cringe in embarrassment.

Hemorrhoid is also not the single cause of pain, bleeding or itching of your behind. So it is better to actually consult a doctor in case it is due to more serious ailments such as colorectal cancer.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

As with many maladies, the best way against a flaming bottom is to prevent it. Here are simple habits that could pave the way to better anal health.

Rough up your diet with fibers. A healthy diet, with lots of fiber and fluids, is the surest way against hemorrhoids. Most hemorrhoid inflammation is triggered by constipation that leaves fissures in the anal area, exposing it to possible infection. Fiber and fluids helps expel body wastes regularly thereby making bowel movement smooth.

Heed the call of nature. Do not delay removing bowels when you feel the urge to do so. Also, do not spend more time in the toilet than is necessary. Once the bowels are removed, do not strain to produce more. Straining is a major cause of hemorrhoid.

Exercise regularly. Exercise enhances blood circulation and tone body muscles. Well-toned anal and rectal muscles have less likelihood of contracting hemorrhoids.

What To Do?

So, when you have an achy bottom, what do you do to keep hemorrhoids from flaming?

Apply a soothing lotion. This will sooth the pain and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids. Over-the-counter lotions with hydrocortisone are available for treating an inflamed hemorrhoid. Prescription cortisone suppositories are available if the topical preparation does not work.

Keep the area clean. This is very important to avoid infection and further inflammation of the hemorrhoid. If you are at home, it is best to use soap and water to clean the area. However, if you have to remove bowel outside the comforts of your home toilet, you can use any type of soft, moistened towelettes or wet wipes to get the area cleaned. Baby wipes that are sold in bulk are also practical as they are cheaper than the other versions of wet wipes.

Consult a physician. Visit your doctor whenever you feel you have the symptoms to find out if there is anything specific that cause them. Since hemorrhoid is easily treated and is far from being life threatening, early detection of causes makes it easier for your physician to come up with an effective treatment plan. This may include home remedies and prescription drugs. The bottomline is, you and your doctor get to target the real cause of the pain and discomfort.
